Bed Bug Resistant Furniture – More Products to Help You Fight a Costly Problem

May 14, 2015

If your renter just found a bed bug nestled into his or her bed frame, you can bet they are everywhere in that room, according to Jon Bailey who, for the past six years, has handled bed bug treatment for Central City Concern, an affordable housing and service agency working to end homelessness. “You’ll find them in the end table, in the chest of drawers, tucked into the desk…. everywhere.  If you can’t afford to throw away infested furniture, you really need pieces that help you spot bed bugs early and that can be successfully treated and re-used” said Jon.

Going Beyond Bed Frames: 10 Additional Products Added

In 2010, as it raced the clock to furnish a 176-unit affordable housing building in Portland, Oregon, Central City Concern developed a bed bug resistant bed frame.  Word quickly got out about the Central City Bed’s effectiveness and how it can be easily cleaned and put back into use after an infestation and to date, Central City Bed® has sold 2,700 bed frames across the country.

Central City Bed has recently released the following companion furniture:

two ladder back chairs
stacking chair
standard round table
simple desk
four-drawer chest (2 sizes)
four storage wardrobes  (2 sizes)

“We sell a lot of bed frames,” said Sarah Porter, Program Manager, “but our customers are often furnishing an entire room and they need more. They have frequently asked us to provide additional furniture items and we are pleased to respond to their needs with these new pieces of quality furniture.”

Bed bugs are a costly and chronic problem for many providers of furnished apartments in the United States. Most housing developers and providers develop full-scale programs to prevent and eradicate bed bugs in their buildings.  Central City Bed operates under the umbrella of Central City Concern, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that has received national recognition for its innovative programs ending homelessness and helping people achieve self-sufficiency.

The Atlantic Magazine Covers the Psychological Toll of Bed Bugs

Oct 20, 2014

In a recent article in The Atlantic, writer Rose Eveleth recounts her third bed bug infestation experience. Beyond the itching and the interrupted sleep, Rose goes deeper into the anxiety and stress that affects people long after the bugs are gone:

"I used to joke that I had bed bug PTSD. There's a certain kind of anxiety that the seemingly invisible biters incite. But in fact, it might not be a joke. Research is starting to show that bed bug infections (sic) can leave people with anxiety, depression, and paranoia. And that's normal. In fact, it would be weird for you not to be freaked out, says Stephanie Perron, a doctor and researcher at the University of Montreal. 'If you have bed bugs, and if you don't care, that's not a normal reaction. You should be worried. I would consider it a normal reaction to a stressor.' "

In the article, Rose reports on a few studies that have evaluated the stress and impact on mental health.

Bedbugs - It's a Musical!! Extended in New York City through November 2nd

Oct 14, 2014

While we don't find bed bug infestations funny necessarily, we thought that learning about a Broadway musical about bedbugs could add a lot of levity to your workday that may include dealing with the pests in the real world, in real time. But without an inspirational musical score.

Bedbugs - It's a Musical has attracted rave reviews in New York. The musical about mutant bedbugs that terrorize New York City has got it all: revenge, family, pesticides and, of course, a love story. The production was first released in 2008 and has taken six years to evolve into the hit it's become.

The New York Times dubbed it a Critics' Pick, adding: “A theatrical blast of fresh air, Bedbugs!!! is an audacious rock-’n’-roll concoction that never stops surprising. The sci-fi slapstick tradition of Little Shop of Horrors and The Rocky Horror Show is alive and well and, now, six-legged.” Full review here.
Other reviews have called the production "zany, a must-see, and musical comedy genius."

We are pretty sure the story line doesn't go as far as shopping for replacement furniture but never fear New York City - the Central City Bed is here!
